Long exposure is a captivating style of photography that is accessible\, especially with group outings like the Tdot Shots community events. We are GTA creators and photography enthusiasts and experts. \nJoin us for an evening of creative long exposure photography in Toronto’s vibrant downtown. We limit our group to 15 participants. Early birds can chat and check camera settings and get to know organizers and other participants.\nRain date is the next evening at the same time and place. We only use the backup date in event of extreme weather conditions otherwise we shoot rain or shine. \nWe always shoot in the central downtown area. A rough route will be announced the morning of the meetup. Often it is central downtown mainly in the Financial district. Our route is subject to change depending on local conditions and events.  \nWorkshop Component\nThis photo walk is part social event and part instructional session. We offer attendees the opportunity to ask questions about gear\, technique and aesthetics\, and get practice shooting long exposures with mirrorless and DSLR gear.\nBonus: participants get access to an online discussion page for the event and online courses on our site tdot.co. No need to have expertise – learn the basics of manual mode or shutter priority mode. \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nA post shared by Paul Flynn (@to_shots) \n\n\n \nAbout Paul Flynn\nToronto-based photographer Paul Flynn is known for his cityscapes and street photography\, capturing the urban essence of Toronto through both long-exposure shots and creative compositions. His long exposure photography is especially intriguing\, as composition plays a vital role. During the pandemic\, Paul had a project documenting theatres and entertainment landmarks that were temporarily dark. He loves scouting prime locations to combine the engaging contrast of transit and traffic with the towering cityscapes of the Toronto skyline including CN Tower and financial district. We featured Paul’s work a few times including in this post on his project. \nAbout Tdot Shots\nMike Simpson founded the group and website/social in 2018. For nine years the team at Tdot Shots has hosted photo walks\, workshops and annual photo contest in Greater Toronto. Our community shoots a variety of stylers including landscape\, street and cityscape photography. We promote our members via our social page and website. SUMMARY:Magnum's First Photo Exhibit and Documentary Photography Workshop with Tdot Shots March 21\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Feature image credit: Selected works © Magnum Photos. Exhibition view courtesy of The Image Centre. \nJoin us as we visit the Magnum’s First photography exhibit and discuss documentary photography and photojournalism. We will meet for a street photography workshop and walk to the Image Centre for a talk by a guide. \nEvent organizer Mike Simpson has designed an active\, hands-on documentary photography workshop structured as a guided photo walk. Participants will explore the differences between documentary photography and photojournalism while photographing compelling subjects in downtown Toronto and engaging with a creative community of peers. \nParticipants will receive a private one-hour guided talk with a docent at The Image Centre before public opening hours. If you cannot join us at 9 am you can catch up with our group at 11 am at the venue. \nInspired by the pioneering photographers of Magnum Photos — including figures such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa — we will consider how contemporary street photography connects to the traditions of mid-20th century documentary practice. \n50% of proceeds from this event will be donated to The Image Centre in support of its exhibitions and programming. \nTime and Location\nMeeting Time and Location – TBA – You will receive an update the evening before the event. We will meet in the downtown core a short distance from the venue.\nwhich is downtown near Yonge and Dundas St. We walk as a group from our meeting place to Image Centre. Our walk is accessible. \nImage Centre – 33 Gould St\, Toronto Metropolitan University\, Toronto. \n \nPhotographers featured:\n\nHenri Cartier-Bresson: Includes his 1948 documentation of Gandhi’s funeral in India.\nInge Morath: Features her portraits of upper-class life in Mayfair\, London\, and a notable photograph of a woman in a limousine.\nErnst Haas: Contains behind-the-scenes images from the film set of The Land of the Pharaohs.\nRobert Capa: Work from WWII and postwar Europe\, including Italy and Eastern Europe.\nWerner Bischof: Images of people and street scenes from South America and Japan\, captured shortly before his death in 1954.\nJean Marquis: Scenes from Hungary (often shown alongside Capa’s work).\nErich Lessing: Documentation of postwar Vienna and Central Europe.\nMarc Riboud: Early work documenting life in Dalmatia\n\nExhibition History \n\nLost & Found: The exhibition went missing around 1957 and was rediscovered in the basement of the Institut Français in Innsbruck\, Austria\, in 2005.\nNorth American Debut: The collection is currently making its North American debut at The Image Centre in Toronto (September 2025 – April 4\, 2026).\nFormat: The exhibition is notable for its vintage gelatin silver prints\, many still mounted on their original fiberboard. \n\nKnowledge Check\nWhat is Documentary Photography + Photo Journalism? \nMagnum Photos was founded to give photographers the freedom to work across both fields\, bridging the gap between immediate news reporting (journalism) and long-term artistic storytelling.  Documentary photography focuses on long-term observation of people\, communities\, and cultural change. Photojournalism often captures decisive\, high-impact moments in current events. \nWe will engage with this fascinating topic we explore and shoot the people and structures of downtown Toronto (street and architectural photography). In addition to discussions of how to approach photographing human subjects\, we will discuss applications of photography in media\, culture\, politics and contemporary life. \nThanks for your interest and see you at the event! \nMike Simpson\nFounder\, Tdot Shots \n_ \nLimited to 24 participants. We will meet up with Chris Noronha\, one of the GTA region’s best landscape photographers and members of the local photo community\, to explore Scarborough Bluffs\, a gem in the east of Toronto. \nThough within the city limits\, this legendary lakefront monolith is resplendent with nature. We will shoot at sunrise and discuss artistic and technical aspects of landscape / nature photography. \nPhotographers and nature enthusiasts are welcome to join. This walk is for all skill levels – bring a smartphone or DSLR/mirrorless camera (though we do recommend a camera with user adjustable manual settings). Learn something new and share tips with your peers. \nTdot Shots photo walk workshop leader and landscape photographer Chris Noronha \nOVERVIEW \nQuote from our workshop facilitator and Scarborough veteran\, Chris Noronha \nI’m really looking forward to showing you the beauty of the Scarborough Bluffs in the fall. If you’ve never visited during this season\, you’re in for a real treat! This workshop is a great opportunity to sharpen your skills in capturing both the natural landscape and candid lifestyle images of the many visitors who enjoy the Bluffs. We’ll explore artistic techniques such as composition\, framing\, and storytelling\, while also covering technical skills like managing exposure in changing light and using depth of field for impact. A DSLR or mirrorless camera is ideal\, but a phone camera will work too. Tripods are recommended for stability\, especially if you’d like to try long exposures\, but they are not required. And of course\, dress for the weather. The goal is to enjoy the process\, build confidence\, and leave with compelling fall images you’ll be proud of. \nCost: $15\, limited to 20 participants.  \nOnline support: a participant’s web page will be established on our website. It will go live at least one week prior to the event – introduce yourself\, review resources and provide your own ideas and tips! \nTransportation: The Bluffs has paid parking and is accessible by TTC though it is easier to travel by car. We recommend car pooling. Parking payment enforcement is strict.  \nThanks! We appreciate your support of Tdot Shots and the workshop facilitator\, Chris Noronha. \nResources: View Chris’s website and Instagram. \n_ _ \nQUESTIONS \nPlease send your questions to Mike via tdot@tdot.com \n Hope to see you online at the community and courses site and bright and early at the event! \n

SUMMARY:Long Exposure Night Photography Photo Walk Workshop with Paul Flynn and Tdot Shots on May 17\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Long Exposure Night Photography Photo Walk and Workshop with Paul Flynn and Mike Simpson from Tdot Shots on May 17 (rain date May 24)  \nWelcome all curious and creative photographers!\nHave you ever wanted to capture streetcars or traffic light streaks with incredible night time cityscapes? Long exposure is a captivating style of photography that is accessible\, especially with group outings like the Tdot Shots community events. We are GTA creators and photography enthusiasts and experts. \nJoin us for an evening of creative long exposure photography in Toronto’s vibrant downtown. We limit our group to 15 participants. You have two co-leaders\, Paul Flynn and Mike Simpson from Tdot Shots. \nTime / Location\n8:30 – 10:30\nFinancial District (TBA) \nWe meet just before sunset\, which in mid May is about 8:40 pm. Be sure to join our group at the meeting spot by 8:30 pm.  Rain date is May 24 at the same time and place. (You receive a community-level membership). \nRequired Equipment\nTripod and a camera that can shoot in long exposure mode (0.5 – 8 or more seconds). While we don’t recommend smartphones you may use one. No need to have expertise – learn the basics of manual mode or shutter priority mode. \nAbout Paul Flynn\nToronto-based photographer Paul Flynn is known for his cityscapes and street photography\, capturing the urban essence of Toronto through both long-exposure shots and creative compositions. \nAbout Tdot Shots\nMike Simpson founded the group and website in 2018. For six years team Tdot Shots has hosted photo walks\, workshops and an annual photo contest in Greater Toronto. Our community shoots a variety of stylers including landscape\, street and cityscape photography. We promote our members via our social page and website. Often we feature the photography of people who come out to our events. \nRegistration / Tickets\nParticipants should buy a ticket to ensure their spot – we are limited to 15 guests. After purchase you will receive an email with ticket information. Contact us if you have any issues. \nQuestions?\nPlease contact Mike Simpson via email if you have questions. SUMMARY:Long Exposure Night Photography Photo Walk Workshop with Paul Flynn and Tdot Shots on Nov. 30\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Photo credits: all photos by Paul Flynn aka @to_shots except image of Paul by Mike Simpson.\nEvent short description: Long Exposure Night Photography Photo Walk and Workshop with Paul Flynn and Mike Simpson from Tdot Shots on Nov. 30\, 2024 \nWelcome all curious and creative photographers!\nHave you ever wanted to capture streetcars or taxis along with incredible night time cityscapes? It’s a captivating style of photography that is accessible\, especially with group outings like the Tdot Shots community events. We are GTA creators and photography enthusiasts and experts. \nJoin us for an evening of creative long exposure photography in Toronto’s vibrant downtown. We limit our group to 12 participants so we increase both intimacy and safety. You have two co-leaders\, Paul Flynn and Mike Simpson from Tdot Shots. \nTime / Location\n4:30 pm – 7 pm\nFinancial District (TBA) \nWe meet just before sunset\, which is 4:42 pm. Be sure to join our group at the meeting spot by 4:45 pm.  Rain date is Sunday Dec. 1 at the same time and place. We only use the backup date in event of extreme weather conditions otherwise we shoot rain or shine. \nWe always shoot in the central downtown area. Rough route will be announced the morning of the meetup. Often it is central downtown between Yonge and University Ave\, north of Front and south of Queen in the Financial district. \nRegistration / Tickets\nParticipants should buy a ticket to ensure their spot – we are limited to 12 guests. After purchase you will receive an email with ticket information. Contact us if you have any issues. \nQuestions?\nPlease contact Mike Simpson via email if you have questions. We’re happy to assist. \nThanks for your support\nWe are grateful for your interest in our event and look forward to seeing you on Nov. 30. \n \nPhotos by Paul Flynn @to_shots
