Street Photography Workshop and Guided Visit to Magnum’s First Exhibit at Image Centre
Tdot Shots presents a special photography workshop with historical and artistic depth.
On Saturday March 21, Tdot Shots is hosting a special documentary photography workshop inspired by Magnum’s First, the historic exhibition currently on view at The Image Centre. in downtown Toronto This event blends hands-on street photography with thoughtful discussion about the evolution of documentary photography and photojournalism.
I’m Mike, founder of Tdot Shots. I’m so exited to take you on this journey. Our group will collaborate and shoot together on a street photo walk then have a private introduction with a guide at the exhibit. I’m preparing now and I’ve found some very interesting stories and photography concepts to share at the workshop. Back to the event info! 😊
Founded in 1947, Magnum Photos changed the landscape of photography by giving photographers creative independence and editorial control. Members such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa shaped how the world understands visual storytelling. Their work moved fluidly between immediate news coverage and long-term documentary projects — a balance that continues to influence photographers today.
On our walk we will also discuss lesser known but equally important photographers such as Inge Morath, the first full time woman member of Magnum Photos and legendary street shooters like Vivian Maier.
Limited to 20 participants. Early bird pricing – $9 until March 7.

Two Hours in the Field
We begin with a guided documentary photo walk in downtown Toronto. Participants will explore how to approach subjects respectfully, how to anticipate moments, and how to compose images that tell a story. This is not just about capturing random shots It is about understanding intent — why we photograph and what our images communicate.
Throughout the walk, we’ll discuss the differences between documentary photography and photojournalism, and how contemporary street photography fits within those traditions.
Private Access Before Opening Hours
After our field session, we will proceed as a group to The Image Centre for a private one-hour guided talk with a docent before the gallery opens to the public. This focused session will allow us to closely examine original vintage prints from Magnum’s First, including works that helped define 20th-century documentary practice.
Seeing these images in person — many still mounted on their original materials — offers insight that cannot be replicated online.
Join the Conversation
This workshop is limited to 20 participants to maintain discussion and engagement. Whether you are new to documentary photography or looking to deepen your practice, this event offers a rare opportunity to connect hands-on shooting with photographic history.
