My Creative Journey and Photography Portfolio (Community Member Eric Newcombe)

Hi, I’m Eric Newcombe, a Toronto-based photographer and software developer. By day, I write code, and in my free time I love exploring with my camera. My photography journey began during the pandemic when I took up cycling. Inspired by a friend who captured moments on group rides, I started with a Sony A6000 with kit lens and quickly expanded to photographing all my adventures. These days, I shoot with a Sony A6700 and primarily a Tamron 17-70 lens, focusing on landscapes and cityscapes. Subjects that don’t move or request edits as I like to joke. Some of the major inspirations in my photography come from lessons learned by James Popsys, Chris Burkard, Jamey Price and Jared Polin.
I find joy in spontaneous photography, going out without a plan while following the light and capturing what catches my eye. Though this often leads to some quite unsuccessful days, and some ugly random photos but it constantly keeps my photography growing and educating me what doesn’t work. A lot of my learning comes from experimenting and evaluating what does and doesn’t work, so often you’ll see me all over the place on photo walks capturing the same photo using different positions and settings (I can look quite manic sometimes). My current photography style is to capture and preserve how vibrant and beautiful colours can be, while trying to keep it true to what I saw while clicking the shutter.
At its core, my photography is for myself, though I enjoy sharing it online with friends. A goal I have for 2025 is to do more physical prints and have a zine printed by April, and a full photo book from Peru before the end of the year. For online, I primarily showcase my work through Instagram, and secondarily on my website hosted on Pixieset. I chose Pixieset for the company’s focus towards photography while maintaining the hallmarks of a personal site including features such as blogging and easy to use templates. The ability to add collections as well as client galleries is super simple in my experience, though the other major site providers such as Squarespace would be just as easy I’d imagine. I had personally skipped over WordPress because I didn’t want to maintain the site, and passed on Squarespace as it is a more general targeted site, but I know plenty of people happy using their service.
Editor’s note: We are grateful to Eric for sharing from such an impressive portfolio. Cheers!
Re: WordPress many people do not find it difficult to create or maintain with a WP site. Of course try Pixieset or Squarespace or Wix or any other platform you would like to use! Learn more about portfolios and platforms in our new Tdot Connect course Mastering Visual Portfolios.
