Black and White Photography By Toronto-based Photographer Cale Heit (Member Feature)

Feature image by the photographer Cale Heit

Welcome to the profile of Cale Heit, a GTA photographer I met through Tdot Shots events and we often chatted about travel and photography.

Cale has a strong portfolio of black and white images. I invited the creator to write about photography, technique and aesthetics. The result is this profile, which is written by the photographer.

For those who know me, I always need to be busy. Whether it be home, work or play, idleness is not my trait. There are many pluses with this characteristic. However, as I am getting older I have found that life passes by at an increasing rate.

As a result, I took up photography as a means to stop and take in those moments. To really enjoy experiences, I now use photography as a means to distill the essence of the moment, even for a brief period. I started off on IG, posting every day as a photo journal. After a year plus, I decided the pressure of capturing every day was too much.

I am still discovering my style, and learning what photography means for me. Currently, I jump between BNW and colour photography. Each provides me with differing rewards. With black and white photography, I can focus on the content, composition, mood, contrasts and subtleties as well as the light. With colour photography, it brings out the richness, vibrancy and energy of the moment.

I am fortunate that work takes me across the globe, and I use this opportunity to experience other environments, cultures and people. I get an hour here or there to pop out from the airports and meeting rooms to enjoy a moment. I supplement this need to explore on my vacations, at the cost of irritating those traveling with me for having to stop frequently to take another photo. Even in the world of photography, I go fast with minimal set up.

Because of my limited time, I capture moments either with my iPhone or my travel light Fujifilm X-S10 mirrorless camera. Due to limited time, I edit with my cell photo software or a 10 year old version of Photoshop.

The honest truth is that capturing moments is a hobby. I am humbled to be a very small part of a great community and network of creative and talented photographers and adventures within the GTA and sometimes across the globe. Thank you, for your support.
