Toronto Photographer Feature: Anil Beharry aka @Anillien (Community Member Profile)
Editors’ Intro: Anil joined us at our University of Toronto photo walk this spring and I loved Anil’s shots. They were intense, capturing the drama of the campus, and details included great framing and depth of field, along with a subtle and tasteful colour palette. So I invited @anillion to participate in our Tdot Shots Five Questions interview. Please read on and enjoy the photos!

TDOT SHOTS FIVE QUESTIONS INTERVIEW
Our huge thanks to the photographer for taking the time to answer the questions and contribute to this post!
Who are you?
I’m a photographer based in Toronto, Ontario, and when I shoot, my goal is usually to make everything look cinematic. I dabble in different genres of photography, but I’d mainly describe myself as an urban photographer, with live events and performances being one of my main specialties. I’m drawn to images that have energy, atmosphere, and a mood that pulls people in.

How did you get started with photography?
I got started almost by accident. I was on a pier trying to figure out my brother’s DSLR and not really getting anywhere, but while I was there I witnessed a beautiful sunset and ended up capturing some photos I loved on my phone. Seeing that I was able to capture images I really liked on my phone gave me the itch to start taking more photos. After that, I started shooting events around the city with an old iphone, along with graffiti and street scenes that caught my eye. A friend of mine who was already into photography encouraged me to start posting my work and eventually get my first camera. Later, I took a photography elective in my last year of university, did really well in it, and from there things started to snowball.
What do you like to shoot and where?
I love shooting in the core of Toronto because the city always gives you something to work with. Even when nothing major is happening, I’m drawn to the architecture, the streets, and the way small moments can become visually appealing with the right framing. I naturally gravitate toward leading lines, darker scenes, moody weather, reflections after rain, and anything that makes the city feel more atmospheric. If it’s foggy outside, that’s probably when I’m happiest with a camera in my hand.

What gear do you use?
Right now I shoot on a Sony A7IV. My go to lenses are the Tamron 28–70mm f/2.8 and the Tamron 70–180mm f/2.8, since that combination gives me a lot of flexibility for both city shooting and live events. I like having a setup that lets me adapt quickly to different situations while still giving me the aesthetic I want.
Who are your favourite photographers?
It’s hard to narrow it down, but a few photographers who inspire me are Michael Sidofsky (@Mindzeye) from Toronto, Ivan Wong (@ivvnwong) from Los Angeles, Kan Kankavee (@kankankavee) from Thailand, and Junya Watanabe (@jungraphy_) from Tokyo. I’m especially drawn to photographers who can make urban environments feel cinematic and full of atmosphere, which is something all of them do in their own way.

Here are more photos Anil captured from the Tdot Shots photo walk. We set a goal to find spring blooms and Anil snagged one! We also love the architectural details and interesting public art in these images.
